The Bugatti Chiron has set an unparalleled standard in the world of hypercars, showcasing its extraordinary capabilities with world record achievements. In 2017, just a year after its first unveiling, the Chiron achieved a world first, accelerating from a standstill to an astonishing 400km/h (248.55mph) and back to a stop in just under 42 seconds.
The test run was supervised and officially certified by SGS-TÃœV Saar, the world’s preeminent testing, inspection and certification company, and it cemented the Chiron’s leading role in the extreme performance range.
Introduced in 2016 as the successor to the legendary Veyron, the Chiron continued to push forward the boundaries of speed and performance for Bugatti. More than a top speed setter, Bugatti’s Chiron is a vehicle that took luxury, unrivaled beauty, and craftsmanship to the next level. So important is the vehicle to the Bugatti legacy, that it takes its name from motorsport legend Louis Chiron. Perhaps more closely connected with the history of the car maker than any other racing driver, he won almost every major Grand Prix event for the marque, including the 1931 Monaco Grand Prix in a Type 51. Always wearing his Bugatti red spotted scarf, he began competing in Europe in 1925, showing promise as a privateer until he joined the factory team.
The heart of the Chiron is Bugatti’s 1,500 horsepower, eight-liter W16 engine. To maximize acceleration and reduce turbo lag, the vehicle employs a two-stage strategy, activating two of its four turbochargers at launch, with the remaining two engaging at around 3,800 RPM. Active aerodynamics stabilize the car at speed and its rear wing tilts to function as an air brake during hard deceleration. During the 0-400-0 test, this helped to bring the vehicle to a standstill in .8 seconds, delivering to test driver Juan Pablo Montoya a force of 2g — close to what astronauts experience during space shuttle launches.
The Chiron is an impressive machine. But since Bugatti has completed its 500-unit production run, the only option to buy one is pre-owned. Enter Grand Touring Automobiles.
Available now is a special 2019 Bugatti Chiron inspired by the record-setting 2017 run.
