After 40 years, duPont REGISTRY’s cover cars capture moments in automotive history.
This year, duPont REGISTRY, the source for supercars since 1985, is celebrating its 40th anniversary. In that time, some of the world’s most desirable, iconic, and influential luxury and exotic cars have graced the cover of our magazine over the past 40 years, and together, the cover cars of duPont REGISTRY’s hundreds of monthly issues tell a story of automotive history and its evolution since the ‘80s.
Looking back at duPont REGISTRY’s cover cars from the year 1997, some serious nostalgia is stirred up for any automotive enthusiast, and each year, a cover car shows an iconic moment of the past, when a car we see as a classic today was the hottest new creation on the market. Take a trip down memory lane and look at our 1997 magazine covers below, and continue to celebrate our milestone anniversary by buying a copy of our special 40th anniversary edition magazine.

January – Dodge Viper
The V10-powered and classic-inspired Dodge Viper was duPont REGISTRY’s January 1997 cover star, early on in building its now-legendary legacy.

February – Acura NSX, Triumph Daytona
The iconic Acura NSX, with its incredible agility and mid-mounted V6 powertrain sits alongside a Triumph Daytona motorbike in February 1997 “Choices” cover.

March – Mercedes-Benz SLK
Earlier shown in its concept iteration, the production-spec Mercedes-Benz SLK starred on our March 1997 cover, shown in a bright red as the latest European small roadster.

April – Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet
Our typical anniversary issue choice, the 993 Porsche 911 Carrera Cabriolet was the April 1997 cover star of duPont REGISTRY, shown off with a silver exterior and a red interior.

May – BMW Z3, Porsche Boxster, Mercedes-Benz SLK
Three of the most prominent small, fun-to-drive European roadsters featured on our May 1997 cover: the BMW Z3, the Porsche Boxster, and the Mercedes-Benz SLK.

June – Plymouth Prowler
The hot-rod inspired, retro-futuristically designed Plymouth Prowler is one of the most iconic American sports cars of the late ’90s and early 2000s, and it starred on duPont REGISTRY’s June 1997 cover.

July – Chevrolet Corvette C5
The C5 generation of the Corvette, one of the most iconic generations of the world-class American performance car, was the July 1997 cover star of duPont REGISTRY, and it would go down in history as one of the last production cars to feature pop-up headlights.

August – Ferrari 550 Maranello
Ferrari’s 550 Maranello is an icon with a front-mounted V12 engine sending power to the rear wheels. Still a celebrated car today, it served as the August 1997 cover star of duPont REGISTRY.

September – Dodge Viper, Shelby Cobra
The Dodge Viper sits alongside one of its biggest performance car inspirations, the Shelby Cobra on the September 1997 cover of duPont REGISTRY.

October – Mercedes-Benz M/ML
Due to a conflict with its name, the Mercedes-Benz M-Class, shown on duPont REGISTRY’s October 1997 cover, introduced as practical luxury SUV for everyday enjoyment, eventually had to become the ML. Years and generations later, it was reintroduced to the market as the GLE, which it is still known as today.

November – Lamborghini Diablo VT Roadster
The open-top variant of the all-wheel drive Lamborghini Diablo VT sat at the center of our November 1997 issue, surrounded by other covers as part of a celebratory 150th issue cover.

December – RUF CTR2
Instead of a Porsche, December 1997 saw the groundbreaking Porsche 911-based RUF CTR 2 grace the cover of duPont REGISTRY, complete with skis mounted to its roof rack.
