The Aston Martin DB11 is set to receive some significant changes soon and potentially even a new name. Recent spy videos shot at the Nürburgring showcase the British carmaker testing what, at first glance, looks a lot like a current-gen DB11. Its sleek silhouette remains relatively unchanged. However, a closer look reveals a revamped front end with a larger grille and new headlights.
This sighting comes just days after Autocar reported that Aston Martin filed a trademark for the name "DB12" in the United States. While carmakers often register these names to protect them in case they'd want to use them in the future, this move falls in line with a possible release date for next year.
As Autocar reports, Aston Martin Executive Chairman Lawrance Stroll confirmed in a call earlier this week that this latest update would feel like an all-new car. This includes significant revisions to its engine, transmission, suspension, and interior.
During that call, Stroll commented on the current-gen DB11's interior tech saying, "How can you have an Aston Martin that sells for £150,000 with three-year-old technology?" This is because the brand's flagship line still counts on an outdated Mercedes-Benz infotainment system.
Aside from getting an updated and more competitive DB11, this upcoming successor is said to retain its V8 and V12 engine options. The carmaker has mentioned multiple times that it plans to retain these powertrains for years, and this latest spy video confirms that. As the test car flies by, we get glimpses of what seems to be the sound of a V12. However, it sings a much punchier and rowdy song than the current car.
The DB11 debuted back in 2016, making it more than due for an update. While Aston Martin has yet to announce a release date for its upcoming model. However, with all of its recent tests and sightings, an unveiling later this year wouldn't be surprising.
