Adding turbos to a big engine to build a supercar is nothing unusual, and that’s why Mr. Pagani chose the path less traveled.
The Mercedes-AMG V12 is tried and tested, but the ethos of the Huayra R is to be the lightest and fastest Pagani ever offered. Because of this, the new car demanded all-new power. Horacio Pagani said, “The new engine had to have the charm, romance, sound and simplicity of the F1 engines of the 1980s, while incorporating state-of-the-art technology available today.”
While the seats are molded into the cockpit to add another layer of strength. Chrome-moly has replaced aluminum in the subframes to make it 16% stronger in torsion and 51% stronger in flex. Casting the engine to be a stressed part of the suspension allows for a dry weight of only 2,314 lbs. The Huayra R is an order of magnitude stronger than the Huayra BC, and it is a solid foundation for the future. Safety is another critical consideration.
The Huayra R exceeds all FIA rules thanks to an integrated roll cage. It has energy absorption zones and shear plates to send impact energy around the driver. A fire suppression system is also standard equipment. Perhaps the most potent safety feature is invisible. The carefully sculpted aerodynamics generate 2,204 lbs of downforce at 199 mph. More than enough to keep the tires glued to the track. Aerodynamics and suspension systems work in unison to adjust the shock valving and bump stops, and their coordination is flawless.
