In a show all about automotive excellence, it’s no wonder Bugatti was the main event.
The Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este is a highly anticipated automotive event, with the world’s finest automobiles put on display set against the backdrop of a Renaissance-era palace-turned luxury hotel, situated right next to the sparkling waters of Italy’s Lake Como. The entire event is an ode to classic beauty and luxury, which is why Bugatti and its cars couldn’t be in a more fitting place. This year’s Concorso d’Eleganza saw a Bugatti Type 57S Vanvooren Cabriolet, one of just four in existence, win both the class A category: The Golden Age of Elegance: The Art Deco Era of Motor Car Design, and the Best of Show Award.

Along with that, A 1934 Bugatti Type 59 race car, and a 1937 Type 57C Stelvio Cabriolet with Gangloff bodywork were at the show. The Type 59 race car started life as a factory race car and was then converted into a sports car that competed in races until 1937. It had only five owners, one of whom was Belgium’s King Leopold III from 1938. Its beauty and storied legacy earned it the FIVA Trophy for Best Preserved Pre-War Car at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este. The Type 57C Stelvio Cabriolet was the first Type 57 model that had a supercharger installed by Bugatti. Named after the Passo dello Stelvio, or Stelvio Pass, the car’s powerful engine helped it easily take on the steep mountain road.
In a more modern category, Concept Cars and Prototypes, Bugatti won the Design Award at this year’s Concorso d’Eleganza with the Bugatti Bolide. Unveiled in 2020, the Bolide is the most extreme Bugatti ever, with a track-focused ethos and an incredible power-to-weight ratio. This year’s Concorso d’Eleganza Villa d’Este was incredible for Bugatti, but that’s nothing new, as Best of Show in 2013 went to Ralph Lauren’s 1938 Bugatti Type 57SC Atlantic, just one of two known surviving original examples. Along with that, the Bugatti La Voiture Noire, a car that pays homage to the infamously lost Type 57C Atlantic, won the Concept Cars and Prototypes category in 2019.
