The Porsche Taycan shines on an international road trip.
Between Stuttgart, Germany, and Istanbul, Turkey, there are 7 countries to cross, and Mayk Wienkötter, Porsche’s press spokesperson for the Taycan, embarked on the journey to join a Taycan meetup organized by the Taycan Club Turkey, and to put the Porsche Taycan’s ability to travel long distances to the test. The comfort, driving range, practicality of the Porsche Taycan, and the efficacy of the electric vehicle charging infrastructure through the multiple countries, both inside and outside of the European Union, would all be the dependent factors on the road trip’s success.
The trip started at the Porsche Museum in the morning, fighting rush hour traffic to get out of Stuttgart. The first charging stop only required 18 minutes to charge a mostly depleted battery back to 80 percent. After that, the trip went through Austria and Slovenia and then to Croatia to stop and charge at a station south of Zagreb. A lengthy wait at the border between Croatia and Serbia added to the challenge of the road trip, and at a hotel in Belgrade, the Taycan could charge overnight.
Leaving Serbia and entering Bulgaria, the Taycan made it through a long traffic jam in Sofia before stopping to charge at a station south of Sofia. It only needed 16 minutes to charge to two-thirds capacity. A final charging stop came after another traffic jam, and the Taycan reached Istanbul after driving for nearly 1,400 miles 25 hours after the trip’s start.
The Taycan meetup in Istanbul featured 25 cars, the Taycan Turbo GT, and the new electric Porsche Macan that Porsche brought to the event. On the way back to Stuttgart, the first charging stop happened at a station off the highway. The second stop, at a car dealership, needed only 20 minutes to get from 9 percent to 81 percent. After 12 hours of driving, the first stage of the trip back home ended in Belgrade, where the car charged at the hotel. Leaving the next morning, the next charging stop was the same one visited before, south of Zagreb in Croatia. After that, the next charging stop was in Austria, and one last stopping after a traffic jam in Munich had to be taken before returning to Stuttgart.
With over 2,700 miles driven throughout the road trip, the Porsche Taycan proved on its journey from Stuttgart to Istanbul and back that it’s not just an exciting and futuristic luxury sports car with all-electric power but also a practical and comfortable long-distance journeying machine.
