Hollywood actor Patrick Dempsey has revealed that his personal car collection is missing a couple of Porsche models from eras that he’d like to complete—but he fears he doesn’t have the space to do so.
Talking to duPont REGISTRY on a call with selected media, the Grey’s Anatomy TV star – who recently played racing great Piero Taruffi in Michael Mann’s Ferrari movie – said that he’s currently awaiting delivery of a new 911 Dakar.
“I’m waiting on the Dakar right now; hopefully, I’ll get that in about a month or so,” said Dempsey. “I have the 911 R that I got in 2015, my 356 from 1963, a Coupe from 1964, a ’72 T, and I’ve got my little tractor too, the Junior.
“I’m currently driving the 911 Turbo, which I really love as a daily driver. It’s fantastic. I just got my daughter the Macan, so she’s really enjoying that car. And my wife has the Targa, so we’re full-on Porsche family, and my boys love them too.”
Dempsey bought his 356 after starring in the romcom Can’t Buy Me Love in 1987, using his first major acting role to buy a car that he still owns to this day.
“I spent my whole paycheck on that car, and at that time, I think I got the car for $8000 or $9000,” he said. “Probably the best investment I’ve ever had. You know, to this day, it just makes me smile, and it’s so easy to maintain. I’ve had a lot of different brands, a lot of different cars, but there’s nothing like that car.
“I can leave it for a month or two, and I just take a second, and it turns over, and you go off and drive, and it just makes you so happy. People see you coming, and they’re just really open and warm and friendly, and they give you the thumbs up, and they’re smiling, and they’re waving. It’s incredible, and it’s been with me for over 30 years plus now.”
When asked what he’s looking for right now, in terms of collector cars, Dempsey says that space is the biggest issue when it comes to adding to his Porsche range – but that a 914/6 is at the top of his wishlist.
“I just wish I had more space to put them,” he sighed. “You know, it’d be nice to be able to develop a really nice selection, so a 914/6 is something I’d like to add to my collection. Certainly something from the ’50s and the ’90s, so I’ve got one from every era.
“Number one, Porsches are just works of art. They’re beautiful to look at and they’re fun to drive, and they’re great investments that you never lose your money on. And they make me happy!”
