This year, duPont REGISTRY, the source for supercars since 1985, is celebrating its 40th anniversary. In that time, some of the world’s most desirable, iconic, and influential luxury and exotic cars have graced the cover of our magazine over the past 40 years, and together, the cover cars of duPont REGISTRY’s hundreds of monthly issues tell a story of automotive history and its evolution since the ‘80s.
Looking back at duPont REGISTRY’s cover cars from the year 1986, some serious nostalgia is stirred up for any automotive enthusiast, and each year, a cover car shows an iconic moment of the past, when a car we see as a classic today was the hottest new creation on the market. January – AC Cobra
A British sports car icon that served as the basis for the legendary Shelby Cobra, the AC Cobra is one of the world’s most recognizable classic sports cars to this day, and a timeless, charming classic like the Cobra is certainly worthy of a spot on duPont REGISTRY’s January 1986 cover.

February – Rolls-Royce Phantom
Pre-war Rolls-Royce vehicles are some of the most desirable collector cars on the market, especially the flagship Phantom. The signature Pantheon Grille and Spirit of Ecstasy of this antique Rolls are the cover stars of the February 1986 duPont REGISTRY cover.

March – Porsche 911
The air-cooled 911 is one of the most cherished classic sports cars, and in its time, it was one of the most desirable performance machines, which is what earned it a spot on our March 1986 cover.

April – Chevrolet Corvette
The first-generation Corvette of the ’50s is an automotive legend. With its signature wraparound windshield, its mid-century interior, and its copious use of chrome, the C1 Chevrolet Corvette is an instantly recognizable American sports car masterpiece, which featured on our April 1986 cover.

May – Porsche 959
The Porsche 959, featured on the May 1986 duPont REGISTRY cover, is one of Porsche’s greatest legends, which was succeeded by the Carrera GT and the 918 Spyder. With its all-wheel drive and powerful engine, it was a revolutionary milestone in Porsche history, and one of the greatest supercars to wear the Porsche crest to this day.

June – Duesenberg Model J
One of the greatest American pre-war classics, the Duesenberg Model J is a consistent prize-winner at concours events, and one of the world’s most cherished classics. Its spare tire with leather straps can be seen in our June 1986 cover.

July – Bugatti Type 41 “Royale”
Today, the ultra-luxe Bugatti elephant hood ornament, designed by Rembrandt Bugatti, the artist of the family, and it’s a highlight of the July 1986 cover star, the classic ultra-luxe Bugatti Type 41, better known as the “Royale.”

August – Plymouth Fury
The 1950s were known for dramatically-styled cars that sported fins and plenty of chrome decoration. One of the most iconic examples of that glamor is the Plymouth Fury, which starred on the August 1986 cover of duPont REGISTRY.

September – BMW 319
While it isn’t seen from this interior perspective on our September 1986 cover, the BMW 319 was a member of the family of BMWs that originated the legendary “kidney grille” that BMW still uses as a design feature on its vehicles today, nearly a century ago in the early 1930s. That same family of cars originated BMW’s use of the straight-six engine, another BMW tradition that is upheld today.

October – Cadillac Sixteen
The Cadillac Sixteen is known for its massive V16 engine, which highlighted its power and opulence in its time. The American luxury masterpiece served as the October 1986 cover star of duPont REGISTRY, and its legacy inspired a V16-powered Cadillac Sixteen concept in the 2000s, and a V16 engine powers Bugatti’s new Tourbillon today.

November – BMW M1
The BMW M1 is one of the most legendary retro supercars of today, cherished as a collector-grade masterpiece. However, in 1986 when the BMW M1 was the cover star of duPont REGISTRY for November, it was a recent supercar creation and the start of a new chapter in BMW’s performance legacy.

December – Ford Thunderbird
A legend of golden-age motoring, the Ford Thunderbird has created a legacy of being one of the brand’s most cherished nameplates, and it started with the generation exemplified by the December 1986 duPont REGISTRY cover star, depicted in front of the now-demolished Diner on Kennedy in Tampa, Florida.
