Backdraft Racing: Vintage Roadsters With Modern Speed

Sure, you could go out and buy a classic Shelby Cobra, but that’s not a car you’ll want to track or use as a daily driver. For everyday use on the road or at the track are the Backdraft Racing custom Cobra kit cars. These roadsters combine 21st century technology with classic styling in a harmonious way.

The company was founded by two world champion auto racers, Tony Martin and Reg Dodd. Over the years Backdraft Racing has grown to offer four different versions of their Cobra kit cars, the RT3, RT3B, RTX and the extreme TD, for “Track Day.” Each features a high-quality, one-piece glass -reinforced plastic (GRP) molding with extra reinforcement for the wheel arches. Underneath these bodies is a sturdy ladder-type chassis crafted from SAE 1008 2- x 4-inch rectangular steel tubing.

Backdraft Racing combines BMW coil-overs and five-link independent rear suspension along with 7.0-liters of Ford power in each model for speed and agility. These 560 hp cars only weigh 2,450 lbs and will reach 60 mph in just 3.4 seconds.

Inside is a fully upholstered interior that has deep pile carpeting and fine grain leather. Full instrumentation from seven electronic gauges wearing analog faces informs the driver of their race car’s current status.

For the motor racing enthusiast, the Backdraft TD was purpose built. A fully integrated roll cage stiffens the frame and still allows room for a passenger. Every ounce of superfluous weight was shed and the suspension offers more adjustment than their street cars.

Another area where Backdraft rises above the others is through the sale of parts and accessories.
