The history of Audi’s 5-cylinder, all-wheel drive performance is celebrated by putting said history on the drag strip.
For quite some time, Audi has been known for making performance cars powered by rather unorthodox turbocharged 5-cylinder engines with all-wheel drive putting that power on the road. As a matter of fact, Audi has been doing this for 45 years, and in the process, lots of iconic and even legendary cars have come about, and to honor that history, those cars raced each other. The 5 cars that battled it out were the Audi Quattro 20V, the Audi Sport Quattro, the famed Audi Quattro Group B Rally car, The Audi RS 2 Avant, and the Audi S2 Coupe.

Unsurprisingly, the Group B car and its roadgoing counterpart, the Audi Sport Quattro dominated the races, both rolling and standing. Even decades later, both are incredibly-engineered cars with plenty of power. The S2 Coupe consistently finished in third, with the Quattro 20V following with impressive performance despite its age, and the RS 2 Avant disappointingly finishing in last, despite a powertrain that Porsche had a hand in creating. With the RS 2 Avant’s reputation for speed, it’s even possible that there was an issue with the car that was raced. Despite that, these cars are all some of the coolest, quickest, best-sounding, and most iconic cars on the road, and their contributions to Audi’s performance legacy are shown in today’s Audi RS 3, which for compact cars, holds the fastest Nürburgring lap time.
