Audi’s new electric performance will take on the role of the flagship.

It doesn’t feel like it’s been that long since Audi first introduced its R8 supercar, but it’s been nearly 16 years since the incredibly dynamic, powerful, and beautiful machine took on its role as the top-of-the-line offering for the four-ringed brand. Since then, it’s made a name for itself as a modern classic and a highly competent performance machine, and it’s been the subject for all sorts of innovation for Audi. After more than a decade and a half, however, the R8 is finally ready to bow out as Audi’s flagship model, and give the role to what will apparently be a new, all-electric supercar, bearing a different name.

With models like the RS e-tron GT, Audi has already proven that it is a force to be reckoned with as a brand when it comes to electric performance, which means for this upcoming car, expectations are sure to be high. In Audi’s journey toward transitioning to electric power, it has especially looked toward its racing and performance portfolio as inspiration for its newer electric projects, the quattro Sport rally cars being the most prominent examples. Being such a large part of Audi’s performance DNA, it isn’t much of a surprise that the R8 would eventually become the subject of Audi’s new electric vision. While it is certainly bittersweet that such an iconic supercar will be leaving us before we even felt as though it has been around for a long time, its successor is sure to be something truly special.
