The 5 Series from BMW has a long-standing history as one of the world’s favorite executive sedans. It combines handsome style, luxurious appointments, and a remarkable driving character to make for a car that’s undeniably enjoyable. The newest generation of the BMW 5 Series, which has just been revealed retains this character, but for the firs time, makes it available as a fully-electric model: the new BMW i5. In addition, the combustion engine-powered models of the 5 Series are available with mild hybrid technology, and BMW says that plug-in hybrid models will arrive in the US come 2024.

At launch, there are five different 5 Series models: the 530i, the 530i xDrive, the i5 eDrive40, the i5 M60 xDrive, and the 540i xDrive. While sportiness is a characteristic of the 5 Series in general, the new all-electric i5 M60 xDrive shows off the 5 Series’ sporty character the most. It boasts 590 horsepower and 549 lb/ft of torque, getting from 0-60 in just 3.7 seconds towards a limited top speed of 143 mph.

Luxury is also a major focus, with features like a Harman/Kardon or Bowers & Wilkins sound system available, as well as a fully leather-free Veganza-upholstered interior for the environmentally-conscious, and Merino leather as an option. BMW’s attention to detail even includes designing air vents that are barely visible and unobstructive of the serene interior. With new electric models and advanced innovations, the new BMW 5 Series has everything that makes the 5 Series great, in greater quantity.
