duPont REGISTRY October 2015 Uncovered – Gulf 918 Spyder

The month of October, full of fall leaves and scary costumes, is just around the corner and with it comes a fresh new issue of the duPont REGISTRY. Within this issue is our Ninth Annual Watch Guide, featuring the finest watches from all around the world. On the cover of this issue is a Porsche 918 Spyder wearing a costume in the form of a one-off Gulf livery. According to the owner, it’s “the one and only Gulf Oil L.P and PCNA (Porsche Cars North America) approved Gulf Livery painted car with winning number 2 and 20.”

This 918 Spyder and its unique exterior finish were brought into the world after the owner came up with the idea of honoring the legendary Porsche 917K race car, which sported the Gulf livery.

In order to make this happen, the owner had quite a few hoops to jump through – mostly licensing hoops. After weeks of deliberation and communication, he got the green light to create the Gulf 918, and the rest is history.

Since the Weissach Package was installed in this particular example, the Gulf 918 creates 887 horsepower and 944 pound-feet of torque, thanks to its 4.6-liter V8 paired with two electric motors. This power allows the new-age classic to propel from 0-60 mph in 2.5 seconds and hit a top track speed of 214 mph.
