Mecum To Auction Cannonball Run Record-Breaking Ferrari Dino At Monterey

This charming classic also has its own epic story.

While it was a popular and groundbreaking model for Ferrari in its time, and one of the most cherished classics from the legendary manufacturer today, the Ferrari Dino 246 was ahead of its time in a way. Rather than being sold as a Ferrari, it was sold under the Dino marque with a mid-mounted V6 rather than Ferrari’s more common V8 and 12-cylinder engines. However, Ferrari’s hybrid 296 supercar uses a V6 today, and so does the most powerful production roadgoing Ferrari yet, the new Ferrari F80.

The Dino was an important milestone in Ferrari’s history, not only for its engine but also for the fact that it was the first production model from Ferrari to have a mid-mounted engine. Because of its impact and influence, it’s one of the most desirable classic Ferraris on the market, and one that will be crossing the block at this year’s Mecum Auctions Monterey 2025 Auction.

However, this 1973 Ferrari Dino 246 GTS isn’t just any Dino, it’s a special example that has an incredible story behind it. It was driven during the 1975 Cannonball Run by Jack May, who set a record by driving from New York to Los Angeles at an average speed of 83 mph in just 35 hours and 53 minutes alongside Rick Cline. Consigned by Jack May himself, the car combines the legacy of the Dino with the excitement of the Cannonball Run and Jack May’s illustrious racing career, with experience at venues like Sebring, Mille Miglia, Road Atlanta, and more.

The car is in stunningly preserved, unrestored condition, finished in Bianco over a Rosso leather interior, proudly showcasing its heritage, and it’s set to cross the block at Mecum’s 2025 Monterey Auction, which is taking place from August 14-16 at the Del Monte Golf Course in Monterey, California. With an amazing story behind it, anticipation is already building for the bidding on this legendary Dino.
