Ferrari F40 Review

Debuting in 1987, the Ferrari F40 specs were those of the quickest and most robust Ferrari model of its time. Their goal was to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the prominent brand. As such, the F40 was the last Ferrari to have a seal of approval given directly by Enzo Ferrari himself. The two-door Berlinetta-style, mid-engine supercar design focused solely on performance. Therefore, it is a top choice for those who cherish speed and superior performance above all else. As a result, the Ferrari F40 was featured in a number of racing events and competitions in the late 1980’s and early 1990’s. Production of the original models ceased in 1992, but LM/GTE race models continued to be produced until 1996.

Ferrari F40 Engine

A mid-engine model, the Ferrari F40 specs a 2.9-liter twin-turbo, rear mid-longitudinal V8 engine. With a horsepower production of 163 hp/liter and a maximum torque of 425 lb-ft at 4,000 rpm, it comes as no surprise that the F40 found its place in the field of competitive racing. This impressively robust engine, paired with an aerodynamic design, allows the sports car to reach top speeds of 201 mph. During its original production period, this was no small feat; the Ferrari F40 specs make it the first production car model to surpass the 200-mph mark. Even more thrilling for speed fanatics is the fact that it can accelerate from 0 to 62 mph in a mere 4.1 seconds.

Ferrari F40 Specs - Form & Function

Ferrari F40 Specs:

Horsepower: 471 hp
Torque: 425 lb-ft
0-60 mph: 3.8 seconds
1/4 Mile: 11.8 @ 124.5 mph
60-0 mph: 119 ft

Ferrari F40 Transmission

A conventional five-speed manual transmission is included as a standard in the Ferrari F40 specs. The inclusion of the five-speed transmission allows you to have a more hands-on experience while driving this sports car. For many supercar enthusiasts, this means a more enjoyable drive. It also means easier maintenance, better fuel economy and more control over the vehicle than manual transmissions can offer. With high speeds and a lightweight, aerodynamic design, the optimal control that the five-speed manual transmission provides is a crucial part of the Ferrari F40’s allure. If you can’t drive a gated Italian stick, you should probably reconsider your career in fast food.

Ferrari F40 Brakes

The original Ferrari F40 specs included the use of large ventilated disc brakes in the front and rear. At 13″ in diameter, with four-piston aluminum Brembo calipers, these discs were manufactured specifically for the F40 model. A cast iron surface is paired with an aluminum center to prevent the addition of unnecessary weight. Drivers praise the authentic feel of these non-boosted brake pedals and have declared the brake pressure to be comparable to that of a servo-equipped braking system. The use of this braking system gives the Ferrari F40 specs a 70 to 0 mph braking distance of 218 feet. Many of the vehicles used in competitive racing, however, have had upgraded F40 LM brakes installed to reduce this distance.

Ferrari F40 Design

The designers of the Ferrari F40 specs strayed from focusing on aesthetics and luxurious comfort with this model. Instead, their intentions were to create a powerful and functional automobile. The result was an aerodynamic, lightweight and robust design. To ensure that the vehicle was strong, yet lightweight, panels made of Kevlar, carbon fiber and aluminum were used. Likewise, the windshield and windows are made of polycarbonate instead of traditional glass. Furthermore, the forward-sloping hood and the dimensions (171.6″ L x 78″ W and 44.3″ H) were developed through intensive aerodynamics testing. It was to ensure that the design would allow for superior functionality.

Ferrari F40 Prices

Because the Ferrari F40 is no longer in production, the prices for this particular model can vary drastically. Like other used vehicles, the mileage, overall condition and the year that the car was manufactured all play a significant role in pricing. It is important to note, however, that production numbers of the Ferrari F40 specs out around 1,300. In turn, its status as an iconic supercar of the 1980’s is also taken into consideration during pricing. As a general guideline, you can expect to pay anywhere between $400,000 to $1.5 million USD for a Ferrari F40 in mint condition.

Ferrari F40 Interior

With an exterior design that’s focused on performance, the interior of the Ferrari F40 follows suit. To eliminate unnecessary weight, designers opted to forgo many typical additions to the interior. Features such as a glove box, carpeting, leather trim, door handles, panels and a sound system are missing from the model as a result. This contributes to a simplistic interior that is similar to the interior of a race car. The inside of the Ferrari F40 specs incorporate necessities, such as air conditioning, basic gauges, bucket seats, a steering wheel and a clutch.

Ferrari F40 Standout Features

The cutting-edge Ferrari F40 model has topped numerous lists, further highlighting it as one of the most iconic cars of the 1980’s and 1990’s. With a distinctive appearance, a lightweight body and an unparalleled performance. The Ferrari F40 was in a league of its own during its era. As the first production car to break the 200-mph mark, the super sports car is highly renowned, above all, for its speed. Other remarkable features of the F40 include its use of materials like Kevlar, carbon fiber and aluminum. It paved the way for the inclusion of these materials in models that came after it. A true trendsetter in the world of automobiles, the Ferrari F40 is remarkably aerodynamic and built to last.
