The 1970s opened with color and fury thanks to cars like this 1970 Hemi Cuda. Perhaps only this moment of the American supercar era could have allowed something featuring such crazy paint, aggressive appearance cues and the horsepower that made it near-sinister to all “come together … right now … over me.” This example, a one-owner California car until 2008, was among the 284 4-speed Hemi Cuda hardtops produced that decade-opening year. Beyond that, it is listed in the Chrysler Registry as one of just six such examples known to be factory-built with Hi Impact FC7 In-Violet Metallic paint.
Documented with its original broadcast sheet, Dave Wise and Chrysler Registry reports, and a recent 2019 paint refreshing on its previously done comprehensive restoration, this Hemi Mopar features the original drivetrain including the matching-numbers 426 Hemi V-8, the factory 4-speed transmission and the A33 Track Pak Dana 60 differential. The Hemi—residing under the iconic, quivering, argent-painted Shaker scoop—needs little introduction beyond the dual 4-barrel carburetor layout, NASCAR-derived hardware and tire-burning ability. Inside is the Rallye dash, a black bucket-seat interior, Hurst Pistol Grip floor shifter, Music Master AM radio and excellent overall conditioning.
The outside received Cuda trim tags, the drip rail, windshield, fender well and body belt moldings, plus hood pins, HEMI hockey-stick callout stripes in white, a chrome driver’s side mirror, road lamps and special “Hemi’cuda” Shaker trim. As a California release, this car does not have the usual bright exhaust tips. The finishing touches here are the Rallye wheels complete with trim rings and argent centers and wearing F60-15 Goodyear Polyglas GT tires. FC7 paint was not for everybody, and the bright hue with these chrome and white accents gives the car a Peter Max-level color that turns heads every time. An authentic Hemi Cuda with a known history since new, whoever ends up with this classic ultimate Mopar E-body will join an exclusive club of owners.
