If you are looking for a great weekend hobby, the Ferrari Challenge Series is back for their 22nd season. It is open to all generations of Ferrari Challenge cars. Earlier cars like the 430 Challenge and the 458 examples could be heard for miles, running close to 9,000 rpm for hours on end. This put team mechanics on double-duty, having to ensure the valvetrain and connecting rods were inspected on a regular basis. But now, turbos have made their first entry to the Challenge. The 2018 Ferrari 488 Challenge takes the potent engine shared between the Portofino and the 488 GTB, and boosts it to 661 horsepower. Fuel and ignition timing is tuned for high octane while still offering a reliable 9.4:1 compression ratio.
Glass was replaced with Lexan, and the passenger seat was deleted. Because it doesn’t need emissions controls, the engine compartment is 43 lbs lighter, and the Inconel exhaust is 18 lbs lighter than the GTB. This allows the turbos to spin up instantly to deliver 561 lb-ft of torque. You will have an 11.6% in acceleration thanks to optimized transmission ratios, and 4.2% more grip thanks to the wider & lighter wheels.

It is also the first time Ferrari’s Side Slip Angle Control software has been utilized in the Challenge Series. Controlled by two buttons on the steering wheel, your right thumb actuates TC1 controls the level of traction control, and your left thumb is on TC2. This controls the intensity of the system, or how much braking and throttle it has command over. It may be the hottest Ferrari on the track, but the 488 Challenge has AC vents aimed at your helmet.
