Bertone builds beautiful cars. While much of their history has been told through the styling of almost every Lamborghini for sale, their genesis was in bespoke bodies for Fiat, Ferrari, and Alfa Romeo. After the war, Italy was poised to reconquer the world of styling, and that is why the Alfa Romeo B.A.T. Concepts sold for big money at RM Sotheby’s. Over the weekend, the trio was sold as one lot for a whopping $14,840,000.

Not only do they comprise the most valuable post-war Alfas, but it was also the second time that a Sotheby’s Art Auction had listed an automotive lot from their RM Sotheby’s subsidiary. The only time this has happened before was in offering Michael Schumacher’s 2001 Monaco-winning Ferrari. The B.A.T. cars might look like Batmobiles, but their name is an acronym for Berlina Aerodinamica Tecnica. Numbered 5,7, and 9d, they made use of contemporary 50’s tailfins and influences from the Jet Age. They were the highlight of the New York Contemporary Art Evening Auction so we expect to see more exciting & historic cars cross over from automotive to fine art events.
