CCP Spring Classic Auction: 1970 Plymouth Superbird

1970 Hemi Superbird 1

Presented by Collector Car ProductionsIn the world of collector cars, there are a handful of vehicles so unique and noteworthy, they are renowned even beyond the automotive arena. The wild Plymouth Road Runner Superbird is just such a car. Not a styling exercise, the wild-looking front nose cone, and giant rear wing were intended for one purpose, to win races. Building just enough to qualify the radical body style for NASCAR competition ensured rarity and adding the 426 Hemi engine underhood, made the car you see here one of just 77 with an automatic transmission.

Finished in the Hi-Impact FY1 Lemon Twist”” bright yellow, this is one car you will never lose in a parking lot. This is also one of the very best Hemi Superbirds in existence and with only 77 automatics ever built, it is also one of the rarest. The original Fender Tag was decoded by Govier and the car was restored to original factory colours and specs. The car was thoroughly inspected by a noted Mopar authority and restoration expert to ensure it was as correct as possible, and upon completion gave the car his stamp of approval.

The restoration of this scarce Plymouth was performed with an eye to both functionality and correctness. NOS parts were used wherever possible and when that option did not exist, only the very best, most correct reproductions were even considered. The 426 Hemi engine is a non-original block, which has been re-stamped with the correct VIN, and upon examination, one could easily be fooled into thinking they were standing in a Plymouth showroom in 1970. No small undertaking considering that parts needed to bring the engine bay to this level are almost non-existent and each year that Chrysler offered the Hemi saw subtle differences. The trunk has also been given this level of attention and the correct pair of jacks (one for the rear bumper and a unique Superbird jack for the front) remain in place as does a correct spare tire on the proper rim. The interior completes the sense of being transported back in time with carpet, upholstery, gauges and controls all appearing and functioning as though new. Much attention to detail was given to the undercarriage with correct markings, paint dabs and correctly applied overspray to duplicate the car as it rolled off the assembly line.

Although this rare Superbird has been very carefully kept in controlled atmosphere storage, its owner has been insistent that it be maintained as though it were going to be driven at any time. Pop the throttle pedal and turn the key and the fire-breathing Hemi engine roars to life as though brand new. This car starts, steers, and stops in such a fashion that other collector cars would do well to copy. Hemi cars and wing cars have always been strong in the collector market and this show-stopping Plymouth Hemi Superbird has them both. This is truly a once-in-a-lifetime chance to own one of the most admired and desirable cars in the world.

This is just one of approximately 100 great hand-selected cars to be offered at the Toronto Spring Classic Car Online Auction to be held on June 12, 2021 by CCP Auctions.
