Monterey Car Week brought in over 110 cars that sold for over $1 million.

One of the most exciting aspects about Monterey Car Week is seeing what incredibly rare cars will be auctioned off by the multiple auction houses that will be present. For this year’s event, auction houses like RM Sotheby’s, Gooding & Co, Broad Arrow Auctions, Bonhams, Mecum, and more were on hand to present their fine selection of lots.

While at the week’s festivities, we constantly heard that this year’s edition of the famous automotive week was the biggest one in terms of attendance in quite some time. This attendance not only meant many cars were being shown, but also many bidders were ready to lay down seven figures on an automobile at the various auctions.

According to Hagerty, over 110 cars were sold for a price of over $1 million at the Monterey auctions, setting a new record. Since 2014, the number of $1 million+ vehicles to be sold at Monterey has only crested above 100 twice ( 2018 and 2021). Additionally, the auction sales totaled up to $470 million which absolutely obliterates the previous record set in 2015 ($395 million).

Seeing the cars that were going to cross the block at these auctions, it was obvious that the 2022 Monterey auction totals were going to be astronomical. For instance, take RM Sotheby’s who brought a 1955 Ferrari 410 Sport that had an eight-figure estimated price. When the final bid was given, this exceedingly rare Ferrari was sold for $22 million, making it the highest-priced car to sell during the week’s festivities.

For the types of cars being sold, the vast majority of high-priced lots were classics like the 1958 Ferrari 250 GT ‘Tour De France’ Alloy Berlinetta sold by Mecum Auctions for $2.86 million and the second highest priced lot, a 1937 Bugatti Type 57SC Atalante that sold for $10,345,000 through Gooding & Co. There were also more modern classics making waves, like a 1995 Ferrari F50 sold by Broad Arrow Auctions for $5.175 million. On top of that, the one-off Porsche 911 Sally Special that was designed to look like Sally Carrera from the Pixar film Cars had a hammer price of $3.6 million. Most importantly, that sum of money was donated to the Girls Inc. and USA for UNHCR charities.

Those two cars bring up another ongoing trait surrounding automotive auctions: Ferraris of all kinds are selling for big prices. In fact, Ferraris make up 6 out of the top 10 sales from the week in its entirety with the oldest of the bunch being a 1953 Ferrari 375 MM Spider and the newest being a 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB/C Coupe, both of which were sold by RM Sotheby’s.
