If you’re the type of person that prefers to make their own path, regardless of where the paved road ends, then the Rally Fighter might be the car for you. With 20 inches of travel, nearly 450 hp from a Corvette engine and a manually adjustable dual ride height, there aren’t a lot of places that the Rally Fighter can’t go.
First off, let’s catch you up on the history of the Rally Fighter. In 2007, John ‘Jay’ Rogers, Local Motors Co-Founder and CEO, set out to completely disrupt the way things work in the automotive industry. The team used open-source principles to change the way cars are designed, developed and brought to market. Rally cars previously had to be built by the owner; now, Taggart Autosport is building them for clients.
Glance under the hood and you’ll find a GM LS3 E-Rod 376ci all aluminum V8 that produces 430 hp at 5,900 rpms and 424 lb-ft of torque at 4,600 rpms. The LS3 sits back quite far in the powder coated frame to give a great front-rear weight ratio. Before being chosen as the Rally Fighter’s power plant, the LS3 was painstakingly modernized by GM to be street legal, even by California’s tough standards.
Bolted to the block is a GM 4L60E 4-speed automatic transmission that sends power to a Ford 9-inch rear-end with a 4.11 gear. Mash the throttle, and the Rally Fighter will rocket from 0-60 mph in six seconds flat. Give it enough room and it can achieve a top speed of 131 mph. The team also decided to keep the car a RWD vehicle. This makes for an incredibly fun ride on or off the street.
While the LS3 is a more than capable engine, the real story of the Rally Fighter might be the suspension underneath the ride. At nearly 70 inches tall, 80 inches wide, and a 115 inch wheelbase, the Rally Fighter has one mighty tough suspension underneath it to tackle any environment you want throw at it. Tilt the hood forward and you’ll see coil-over shocks with piggyback reservoirs equipped on both the front and rear. But it doesn’t stop there; billet upper and lower front control arms ensure that no hill will get the best of the Fighter.
The combination of the King coil-overs, independent double a-arms and a detachable stabilizer bar helps the Rally Fighter achieve an unbelievable 18 inches of travel in the front suspension. At the back of the car you will find a reverse triangulated four-link rear suspension housing the rear-end that is capable of 20 inches of travel. At the corners you will find 4-wheel disc brakes and various options for wheel and tire packages.
Inside the Rally Fighter, you don’t feel like you are in a rugged off-road machine at all. Open the doors and you’ll find an interior that is capable of comfortably housing yourself and three of your closest friends.
Optional Features include a 6 speed automatic transmission, the best warranty in custom cars, the comfort package, dual exhaust, Recaro seats, a supercharger and upgraded alloy wheels.
