The Saleen S7: America’s First Production Supercar

When it debuted at the Monterey Historic Races in August of 2000, the Saleen S7 emerged as America’s first production supercar. Steve Saleen was known for his powerful Mustangs, but he wanted a clean-sheet design unencumbered by the legacies of Ford’s Fox platform.

Steve Saleen’s Signature on an S7

A tubular space frame of 4130 steel was hand fabricated. A 7.0-liter version of Ford’s 351 Windsor V8 was placed behind the driver. This last great triumph of the Windsor block made 550 hp naturally aspirated. The S7 was one of the world’s first cars to have a carbon fiber body; it paved the way for the magic material to find its way into our modern daily drivers.

Focused on luxury and functionality, the S7 features a leather and aluminum-trimmed cabin for its passengers. With an asymmetrical layout, the cabin pushes the driver closer to the center of the car to help balance its weight for performance and handling purposes. The shape of the S7’s exterior was formed with extreme top speed in mind. At 160 mph, the carbon fiber body creates the supercar’s 2,750 lb curb weight in downforce, which allows stability to be maintained up to the car’s top speed of 220 mph.

If you have a need for speed, the S7 gained twin turbos in 2005. With horsepower increased to 750 hp and torque to 700 lb-ft, the Saleen S7 Twin Turbo reaches a top speed of 248 mph and sprints from 0-60 mph in 2.8 seconds.  In the new iteration, the front and rear diffusers and rear spoiler were reworked to increase downforce by 60 percent. Automatics need not apply, as every model created during the ten year run were all equipped with six speed manual transmissions.

Steve campaigned the S7 at Sebring and LeMans and it proved to be a viable competitor to the biggest auto makers in the world. These cars will only accrue in value, and thanks to a recent surge in popularity, we have a few to choose from – including two signed by Steve Saleen himself. Check them out below, and find the perfect example for your collection.
