Ford just unveiled their new drag strip destroyer in the form of the 2016 Cobra Jet Mustang.
The Cobra Jet Mustang has been around since 1968, and recently it has been produced in 50 example runs for 2010, 2012, 2013 and 2014. Now, in 2016, Ford is bringing the drag racer back for another limited run of just 50 examples, with 25 available in Oxford White and 25 in Deep Impact Blue, according to a press release published today by the American automaker.
Each of these Mustangs is completely turnkey and legal to race in the National Hot Rod Association (NHRA) Stock and Super Stock drag races. The press release also notes that the Cobra Jet Mustang will be available for use in multiple classes in the International Hot Rod Association (IHRA).
“The new car is the first Cobra Jet built off the all-new 2015 Mustang – the only factory 2016 Mustang with a solid-axle rear suspension,” said Dave Pericak, director of Ford Performance, in the release.
What will new owners be getting in terms of power? An eight-second quarter-mile time, thanks to a front inlet Whipple supercharger. Even with this supercharger, its engine consists of 75 percent production Mustang GT components.
The Cobra Jet Mustang will be featuring an 8.50-certified roll cage, five-point race harnesses, a race-prepper automatic transmission and a four-link rear suspension with a 9-inch axle.
