Dodge upped the ante for American manufacturers with their 2014 release of the Hellcat option for the Challenger and Charger. A daily driver muscle car capable of creating 707, it raised the benchmark for what a production car should be able to do, and put most of the competition’s numbers to shame.
This year, Ford has an answer: the Petty’s Garage 2016 Mustang GT “King Edition.”
It’s a beast of a muscle car capable of creating 727 hp, and as an Oct. 23 press release from Ford explains, that’s courtesy of NASCAR legend himself Richard “The King” Petty. The 2016 Mustang spent some time at Petty’s Garage, and each was built up “to the specifications of The King himself.”

“I’ve always liked the look of the Mustang, and the 2016 model gives us a great base car to work with,” said Richard Petty in the release. “These new King edition Mustangs are pretty much the way I’d build my own. They are great fun to drive, and have a signature single exhaust.”
Three editions of the Mustang GT King Edition will be available in 2016, each with a limited run. 243 examples of the King model will be produced. The King Premier model will see only 43 examples, and the King Premier will see just 12. All in all, only 298 customers will enjoy a King Mustang in their collection.
Of course, performance isn’t the only area of these Mustangs that Petty’s Garage tweaked. The rear diffuser, center-mounted exhaust, shift knob, sill plates, floor mats, head restraints and rear spoiler are all Petty designs, and each car will be signed by the man himself on a special dash plate. Petty blue with red and white accents covers the exterior.
