About 6 months ago, Ford sent us the latest in FWD crossovers, the Edge. Front wheel drive is great for tri-cycles and your kid’s Big Wheel, but it is as entertaining as watching paint dry. Someone in Dearborn must have read our review because a new Edge appeared at our office for a week of AWD adventure.

We decided to focus on the differences between the two cars, as both were optioned in a similar manner. Winter Edge was powered by the 2.7 liter EcoBoost, which sends 315 horsepower and 350 lb-ft of torque to all wheels. Those are good numbers, but they are marred by the highway mileage of 24, with 17 mpg city. This is why the EPA ranks it at 4 out of 10 for fuel economy, and 7 of 10 for Smog generation.

Equipped with every possible option, the V6 AWD Edge comes with a price tag of $47,480. It is fairly priced given the competition, but it is steep considering the chassis originated on the 2002 model year Mazda 6. Ride quality and safety have made incredible advancements since then, so maybe it’s time for the Edge to be sharpened.
