Jaguar is making an all-electric transition by 2025, a change that is set to transform the entire British luxury automotive landscape. While this spells the end of a glorious era of powerful combustion engines, the sonorous roar of its V8 engine, which powers the iconic F-TYPE won’t fade away into obscurity. In a landmark move, the distinctive soundtrack of this iconic sports car has been captured and will be preserved in the British Library’s archives. The sound of the last combustion-engine Jaguar sports car will echo for generations to come, reminding us of the automaker’s glorious past even as it steps into a quieter electrified future.

In a commemorative initiative, the recordings of the F-TYPE’s unmistakable supercharged V8 growl were made at Jaguar’s Gaydon Engineering Centre. This state-of-the-art facility is where the F-TYPE’s exhaust note was meticulously crafted and perfected. The supercharged sound of the F-TYPE R 75’s 567-horsepower 5.0-liter V8, chosen for the immersive playback experience it provides, was recorded both inside the car cabin and externally.

Senior Sound Engineer at Jaguar, Charles Richardson, expresses the company’s pride in preserving this unique sound for future generations. The F-TYPE’s V8 sound, a result of countless hours of careful optimization, will now join other culturally significant entries in the archives, cementing its legacy.

It is notable that the V8 engine’s sound will be archived globally, underscoring a worldwide love for this renowned symphony of power. The car selected for the recording was the special edition 2024 Model Year F-TYPE R 75 Coupé. This special, limited-edition model marks the final model year of F-TYPE and 75 years of Jaguar sports cars. Its performance specifications remain impressive, including a 0-60mph acceleration in just 3.5 seconds and a top speed of 186mph.

Cheryl Tipp, The British Library’s Curator of Wildlife & Environmental Sounds, welcomes the addition of the F-TYPE V8 engine’s roar to their archives. The characteristic growl of the engine, now immortalized, is expected to thrill Jaguar enthusiasts and listeners worldwide.

The recordings comprise the unique rev flare on start-up, a steady idle at 600rpm, and a range of the F-TYPE’s vocal abilities. The signature roar, crisp upshifts, and hallmark crackles and pops all contribute to the rich sonic profile of this legendary vehicle.

In a bittersweet farewell to combustion engines, the roaring legacy of the Jaguar F-TYPE V8 is now secured for posterity. This move celebrates the iconic carmaker’s history while embracing a quieter, all-electric future. The unforgettable sound of the F-TYPE V8 will soon be just a click away on the British Library’s website, making for a listening experience that’s definitely music to the ears of car lovers around the globe.
