With over a decade spent as Lamborghini’s flagship model, the Aventador built up quite the résumé.

It’s in the process of taking its final bow, but thankfully the story of the Lamborghini Aventador has a happy ending. After more than a decade in production, the Lamborghini Aventador has been an object of desire and admiration for just about the entire car world. Its naturally aspirated V12 power, all-wheel drive, and stunning looks that have remained fresh, modern, and even futuristic to this day have made it a car that will live on in history as one of the greatest, most iconic supercars of its time. The Aventador had a long history, and in its time it had plenty of iterations and incredible special editions and one-offs, as well as rare cars that used the Aventador as a basis to build an entirely new model. Here, we’ll take a look at the entire history of the Aventador, from the original, all the way to the final Ultimae and the rare cars based off of the Aventador that give us a look at Lamborghini’s possible future.

Lamborghini Aventador Production Variants

Aventador

The original Aventador sent shockwaves through the automotive world. Tasked with the responsibility of replacing the legendary Murcielago, the Aventador had to live up to the high expectations that the Murcielago left behind, and it surely lived up to them. The Aventador’s all-wheel drive and naturally aspirated V12 engine gave it the incredible performance to put it at the highest echelons of the supercar world, with an incredible 0-60 time that was under 3 seconds, and a quarter-mile time that rivals the greatest cars on the road. Along with that was the fact that the Aventador was one of the most comfortable and luxurious Lamborghinis yet, helping it not only carry the Lamborghini legacy but grow it.

Aventador Roadster

As we came to know with just about every Lamborghini roadster before it, the performance, luxury, and style of a Lamborghini go wonderfully with the wind in your hair. Featuring a removable two-piece carbon-fiber roof, the Aventador Roadster was easily able to let the sky in as you drove. Today, it remains one of the greatest open-topped cars to drive in the world, as even without the roof, it maintained the original Aventador’s incredible performance capability and prowess, as well as its composure on the road for varying driving situations.

Aventador Superveloce

How do you get better than a mid-engined, V12-powered, all-wheel-drive supercar? You make it faster, of course. That’s what Lamborghini did to the Aventador when the Aventador Superveloce was introduced. It took the incredible DNA of the Aventador and squeezed even more performance potential out of it, by further improving the engine, and taking anything out of the interior and the car itself that wouldn’t contribute to incredible performance. While the luxurious Lamborghini quality remains, you can see the exposed carbon fiber monocoque of the car in various places, and the Lamborghini Aventador SV is just as fast as it looks.

Why You Should Buy A Lamborghini Aventador SV

Aventador Superveloce Roadster

Over 100 pounds lighter than the standard Aventador Roadster, the Superveloce Roadster blended the very best of both worlds of the Aventador when it was released, the unique experience of a roadster, and the laser-focused performance of the Superveloce. Even the engine, the beating heart and one of the most impressive components in the Aventador, wasn’t safe from being improved when given the SV treatment. It’s both lighter and more powerful, and in a roadster with no soundproofing and a carbon fiber monocoque, that’s an easy difference to feel.

Aventador S

The Lamborghini Aventador, just like any Lamborghini, was never a car known to rest on its laurels, which is why the Aventador S was introduced in 2017, updating and evolving the Aventador to make it an even greater supercar than it already was. With the Aventador S, four-wheel steering was introduced to the model, along with LDVA suspension control, and a refreshed design inside and out, making for an Aventador that was more capable and configurable, and not to mention more powerful than ever.

Aventador S Roadster

While the roadster variant of the Aventador S might not be as much of a performer as its coupe counterpart, there’s no way to deny that the formula of an open-top, mid-engined, V12 supercar that has mechanically identical improvements to the Aventador S is a winning one. The Lamborghini Aventador S Roadster is one of the greatest examples of Lamborghini’s ability to beautifully combine both performance and luxury to make some of the greatest Italian supercars the world has ever known.

Aventador SVJ

Standing for “Super Veloce Jota,” the Aventador SVJ is an evolution of the SV, and based on the Aventador S, it features increased power and ruthlessly decreased weight, thanks to lots of carbon fiber and a titanium exhaust system. Along with that, the Aerodinamica Lamborghini Attiva system, or ALA for short and the evolved LDVA 2.0 system help reduce drag by 1% and improve downforce by 40%, resulting in the SVJ breaking the record for production cars at the Nürburgring by setting a 6:44.97 lap time.

Aventador SVJ Roadster

Imagine the performance of the SVJ, except this time, it’s alfresco. What you are imagining is the wind in your hair as you let 759 horsepower and all-wheel-drive take you from 0-60 in an uncompromised 2.8 seconds, and eventually get you to over 219 mph. The performance, dynamism, looks, and legend status of the Aventador SVJ is something found in only a handful of cars ever made, and once you add all of that into a roadster, it becomes even more special.

Aventador Ultimae

A car with a journey like the one that the Aventador has had for the past 11 years can only end on a high note, and with the Aventador Ultimae, Lamborghini made sure that the Aventador ended on the highest note that it possibly could. With even more power than the SVJ, the Ultimae is undoubtedly the greatest Aventador yet, and the greatest Aventador ever since in a bittersweet moment, it’s the last.

Special Variants

Aventador J

Not long after the Aventador first came on the scene, the Aventador J, a roofless barchetta, was introduced at the 2012 Geneva Motor Show. The origin of the J is in the Miura Jota of 1970. In a convoluted twist, the name Jota comes from the Spanish pronunciation of the letter J, as the Miura Jota was built to conform to the regulations set out in the FIA’s Appendix J, which is all to say that the Aventador J was built with a racing spirit. Obviously, it lacks a roof, but also air conditioning and a radio (since neither would likely be able to do very much) to save weight. The car shown at Geneva was the only Aventador J to be produced, and it sold for an amazing $2.8 million.

Lamborghini’s and the world’s first mid-engined supercar, the Miura helped Lamborghini hit the ground running when it came to achieving permanent legend status. 50 years later, the Aventador carried its legacy with a very rare and very special edition that prominently featured a two-tone paint job that matched the one on the original car.

An Aventador-based, racing-focused one-off Lamborghini, there’s very little chance that anyone will be able to get their hands on this car besides the person it was made for in the foreseeable future. It was Lamborghini’s first one-off car, and while it’s road legal, it serves as a show of force for Lamborghini once it gets on the track. With the Aventador SVJ’s power and highly improved aerodynamics and dynamism thanks to Lamborghini’s Squadra Corse division, the SC18 Alston is just as formidable and capable as it is rare, expensive, unique, and desirable.

Sian FKP 37

The Lamborghini Aventador served as the basis for plenty of firsts for Lamborghini, and in the case of the Sian FKP 37, that was Lamborghini’s first hybrid car. “Sián,” meaning “a flash of lightning” in Bolognese, is an homage to the fact that it’s Lamborghini’s first hybrid, and it uses that hybrid powertrain to achieve over 800 total horsepower, and get to an electronically limited 220 mph. “FKP 37” stands for Ferdinand Karl Piëch, born in 1937, the late chairman of Lamborghini’s parent Volkswagen Group. It’s an incredibly rare and beautiful car that for its owners is an amazing piece in their collections, and for the rest of us is an exciting vision of Lamborghini’s future.

The final naturally aspirated, purely V12-powered car from Lamborghini simply had to be one that stirred up a bit of fanfare, and there’s no better place to do that than on the track. As a matter of fact, the owners of the Essenza don’t even have the car in their own garage.
