A new breed of Lamborghini race cars is coming very soon.

Lamborghini has just announced that they are currently developing their very first LMDh prototype race car. For those unaware, LMDh stands for “Le Mans Daytona hybrid,” and the new Lamborghini will be ready for the hypercar class in the 2024 season of the FIA World Endurance Championship and IMSA WeatherTech Sports Car Championship (GTP class).

In charge of this new foray into the LMDh class race car is none other than Squadra Corse who has recently shown off their abilities with the Essenza SCV12. Unlike the Essenza SCV12, however, this new race car will be powered by a hybrid powertrain. This makes perfect sense for Lamborghini as they have set a deadline for the end of 2024 as to when their entire lineup will be hybridized.

“This step up into the highest echelon of sports car racing marks an important milestone for our company,” stated Stephan Winkelmann, Lamborghini Chairman and CEO. “We will be measuring ourselves against the very best, on the most demanding proving grounds. On one hand, this will give our successful motorsports program even more visibility, but it will also allow us to test future technologies: our LMDh prototypes will become our most sophisticated open laboratory on four wheels.”

With the addition of the LMDh series, Lamborghini Squadra Corse will also have their hands full with their Super Trofeo and GT3. It’s nice to see Lamborghini diving deeper into the motorsport world as nothing beats a raging bull on the track.
