The Lamborghini Murcielago R-GT is a high-performance supercar equipped with a 6.0-liter V12 engine, producing 640 horsepower and accelerating from 0-60 mph in just 3.3 seconds. Built for racing competitions, the R-GT is an evolution of the Murcielago road car with numerous modifications to meet racing regulations. Lamborghini’s track-focused Murcielago made its mark in the world of motorsports by competing in a variety of racing series, including the FIA GT Championship, the American Le Mans Series, and the Super GT Championship in Japan.
One of only nine R-GT examples built, chassis no. 053 was the first model to be developed as a true FIA-compliant racing car. With Lamborghini now being owned by Audi, the Italian manufacturer was able to partner with Audi Sport and the renowned motorsports experts at German-based Reiter Engineering to produce this stunning Murciélago R-GT.
In compliance with FIA regulations, the standard V12 was reduced to 6.0 liters and paired with a Holinger Engineering six-speed sequential transmission. While visually similar to your standard Murciélago, this example features lightweight, racing-specific bodywork. The exterior has been sculpted by Reiter for optimal aerodynamics and weight savings. Currently, 053 features a low-drag Le Mans-style setup. The resulting car had a dry weight of 2,425 lbs and an output of 590 horsepower and 524 lb-ft of torque while emitting a spine-tingling exhaust note reminiscent of V12-era Formula One cars.
Following its short career as a racing car, this Murciélago was briefly displayed at Reiter Engineering before it was enlisted as a development car for future racing components. After its development phase, chassis no. 053 was safely stored before being returned to Lamborghini in 2019 where the previous livery used for racing was then removed to reveal the white livery it is shown in today. According to Reiter, chassis no. 053 was the first “real” R-GT and the basis for every future R-GT to be built.
