Land Rover Unveils PHEV Evoque & Discovery Sport

By this time next year our industry will have several choices for eco-friendly sport utilities. No longer will we have to choose between efficiency and fun, and it looks like England is leading the way. In their latest press release, Land Rover has unveiled plug-in hybrid models of their popular Evoque and the Discovery Sport.

While retaining their off-road abilities, both will be powered by a new turbocharged 1.5-liter three-cylinder. It offers 200 horsepower, which is more than enough to keep the 15 kWh battery charged. A 109 horsepower electric motor is rated at 80 kilowatts and it powers the rear wheels.

With an electric range of 41 miles for Evoque and 38 miles for the Disco, they can be charged from 0 to 80% in half an hour. Perhaps the best feature is what it doesn’t do. The Evoque only produces 32 grams of carbon dioxide per kilometer (36 for the Disco), meanwhile, the Toyota Prius pumps out 105 grams over the same distance.
