2022 Range Rover Debuts With An Evolutionary Look, New Engines, And A Full EV By 2024

The fifth-generation Land Rover Range Rover has arrived, and it’s hiding some significant upgrades under its familiar skin. While this new model’s design looks more evolutionary from afar, it’s actually completely brand new. Instead of implementing radical change, Land Rover opted to build on the winning design formula that has made the outgoing model so successful.

One of the significant changes for this new generation comes from under the hood. That’s because the base powertrain option is now a mild hybrid 3.0-liter turbocharged inline-six engine developing 395 hp and 406 lb-ft. This option comes standard in the base SE trim. The second available option is a 4.4-liter twin-turbo V8 producing 523 hp and 552 lb-ft of torque. While the 2022 Range Rover has just arrived, Land Rover announced that it plans to introduce a plug-in hybrid powertrain for the 2023 model year and a fully electric variant by 2024.

As it stands, the 2022 Range Rover comes in three flavors, each available as a long-wheelbase model and a seven-seat configuration. At the bottom of the totem pole is the SE, which starts at $104,000. Add in the larger V8 engine, and that price climbs to $118,000. The next trim is the Autobiography, which starts at $152,000. At the top of the food chain is the First Edition which starts at $158,200. Keep in mind that these are base prices, which can quickly climb once you begin adding some optional extras.

Aside from a new look and new engines, the 2022 Range Rover gets a brand-new platform. It’s called the Modular Longitudinal Architecture, or MLA-Flex for short. To ensure that the Range Rover retains its off-roading prowess, Land Rover opted to give it all-wheel steering as standard, which should make it more maneuverable in cities and off-road. Additionally, the 2022 Range Rover gets fully independent air suspension to improve its ride quality across various surfaces.

As you might expect from a Range Rover, you get locking differentials as standard and the latest version of Land Rover’s Terrain Response system. In short, this system gives the driver different driving modes that are configured to tackle diverse terrain and surfaces.

Hardware aside, the 2022 Range Rover also benefits from plenty of new tech features and available over-the-air software updates. Aside from offering standard Apple CarPlay and Android Auto integration, the 2022 Range Rover also has built-in Alexa with voice control that works independently from your cellphone. In front of the driver, you now get a massive 13.7-inch digital instrument cluster and a 13.1-inch infotainment screen in the middle.
