McLaren Automotive has opened up their second-ever production facility, called the McLaren Composites Technology Center (MCTC), in Yorkshire, England. The opening ceremony was led by TRH The Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and HRH Prince Salman bin Hamad Al Khalifa, the Crown Prince of the Kingdom of Bahrain.
This new facility cost £50 million, which equates to around $65 million USD. What’s more, it will “create over 200 jobs when fully-operational and generate £100 million (~$130 million USD) gross value-added for the local economy,” according to McLaren.
But what is this facility for, exactly? McLaren says the MCTC will be working on innovating carbon fiber and composites. Furthermore, these materials will be used for future powertrain development in order to drop weight and better their energy efficiency. They are also underway in creating new prototypes for McLaren’s upcoming lightweight carbon fiber tubs used in their cars.
