Off-road performance cars make for some of the most thrilling driving experiences available, but they are quite uncommon in today’s automotive industry. However, two iconic performance cars have recently undergone major transformations into off-road performance icons: the Porsche 911 Dakar, and the Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato. Both are well-known as asphalt and on-track performance heroes, and with lifted suspension and impressive off-road capability, both have flipped the script when it comes to their performance potential. So what happens when the two are challenged to a race?
The Huracan Sterrato sports a V10 engine, while the 911 Dakar sports a flat-six. However, twin-turbocharging adds to the off-road 911’s performance, and both cars are stunted in their straight-line abilities compared to their asphalt-bound counterparts due to their off-road ready setups, translating to 0-60 times and top speeds that aren’t as astronomical as other supercars, but are still very impressive.
While the Lamborghini is lighter and more powerful, Porsche’s penchant for performance engineering could mean an unexpected triumph that defies what may seem to be the case on paper. While the results were surprisingly close, the Huracan Sterrato won two of the three standing-start races, and the 911 Dakar came out in front in only one. The quarter-mile times for each were 11.0 and 11.2 seconds respectively.
While neither of these cars are purely designed for on-road straight-line performance, they delivered impressive results on the drag strip, and prove that whether you’re on the road or off of it, the new Porsche 911 Dakar and the Lamborghini Huracan Sterrato are incredible and unique additions to automotive history, and must-haves for a performance car collection.
