The annual Mecum Auction held during Monterey Car Week at the Hyatt Regency Monterey Hotel and Spa’s Del Monte Golf Course has proven itself as a red-letter event for automobile enthusiasts and collectors. With an astonishing overall sales figure surpassing $45 million over the three-day event from August 17-19, Mecum Monterey 2023 has once again demonstrated its magnetism in the high-end car auction industry. At the heart of these remarkable sales were Ferraris, which dominated the auction’s leaderboard by claiming seven of the top 10 slots. Topping the list was a 1966 Ferrari 275 GTB/6C Alloy Berlinetta that went for an eye-popping $3.41 million. It was closely followed by a low-mileage 1990 Ferrari F40, which garnered $2.53 million, and a 1965 Ferrari 500 Superfast Series II, one of only 12 built, that sold for $1.84 million. Not far behind were more Ferraris, including a 1968 Ferrari 330 GTS that went for $1.76 million.

Private vehicle collections also had their day in the sun, pulling in an aggregate of more than $19.21 million. The Veloce, Schnell & Fast Sports Car Collection made headlines by seeing 21 vehicles sell for a total of $12.91 million. Equally impressive were sales from The Don Williams Estate Collection and the Mike and Debbie Rogers Datsun Collection, which sold eight vehicles each, fetching more than $1 million in total.
Other standouts in the auction included a 1956 Porsche 356A 1500 GS Carrera Speedster that sold for $935,000 and a rare 1971 Chevrolet Corvette ZR2 Convertible, one of only two ever made, that commanded a price of $863,500. Adding a touch of sports celebrity to the event, a 1948 Packard Super 8 Convertible Victoria previously owned by NBA legend Kareem Abdul-Jabbar also found a new home.
Looking ahead, Mecum has an array of intriguing offerings on the horizon. More than 300 motorcycles and 1,000 lots of Road Art from The John Parham Estate Collection are set for auction in September, followed by Mecum’s return to Dallas featuring an estimated 1,500 vehicles.
