The Mercedes-AMG ONE recently showed up to the Monza circuit with a mission and it appears that the mission can be considered accomplished. That mission? Set a new record for production cars, of course. Driving the AMG ONE was Mercedes-AMG factory driver Maro René Engel and the time he needed to beat was 1:55.30, which was set by a Porsche 911 GT3 RS (991.2).
After crossing the finish line, he managed a lap time of 1:43.902, a time that’s just under 12 seconds faster than the previous record. Our friends at Motor1 note that the AMG ONE completed the lap in road-legal specification having been equipped with Michelin Pilot Sport Cup 2 R MO tires. These tires were actually specifically created by Michelin for the AMG ONE hypercar.
It’s no surprise that the AMG ONE was able to break the record considering how much power it’s capable of producing. In total, the AMG ONE’s hybrid powertrain (1.6-liter turbocharged V6 engine and four electric motors) can produce a combined 1,048 horsepower for a 0 to 62 mph time of just 2.9 seconds. That kind of acceleration most certainly benefitted the AMG ONE when coming out of corners and its 0 to 124 mph time of just 7 seconds was beneficial for the multiple straights on the Monza circuit.
