Winners of the 2016 International Engine of the Year Awards

This year’s Engine of the Year Awards have officially been announced, and we’re here to give you the low down.

This year’s judging panel included a total of 62 judges hailing from all over the globe. In order to choose a winner for each category, each judge compared the shortlisted engines to each other in their prospective categories. Qualities like performance, fuel economy and noise, among others, were all taken into account. The maximum possible score for each category was a 15 while the lowest score was a 1.

Last year’s International Engine of the Year, the BMW i8’s 1.5-liter three-cylinder electric-gasoline hybrid engine, was bumped out of first place by the Ferrari 3.9-liter biturbo V8 which powers the 488 GTB. In fact, Ferrari’s 3.9-liter Biturbo V8 cleaned house, winning many of the awards it was eligible for.
