The Polestar 3, the brand’s first electric SUV and arguably its most important model to date, is now available to order with LiDAR. The Swedish carmaker developed the system in collaboration with Luminar Technologies and plans to include it in various upcoming models.
The first of these is the aforementioned Polestar 3, which is currently available for pre-order. Non-LiDAR-equipped models are expected to arrive towards the tail end of 2023, while those with the system won’t land until late 2024. According to Polestar, including the LiDAR system will only increase its ability to work with safety and autonomous driving features.
The Polestar 3 starts at $83,900 for the Long Range Dual Motor model, while a Performance Pack variant comes in at $89,900. The new Pilot Pack with LiDAR option costs an additional $5,000 and adds a subtle bump just behind the windshield so its forward-facing sensors can 3D map the road ahead.
According to the Swedish carmaker, its Polestar 5 four-door GT will be the second model to receive the technology. While it’s expected to debut sometime in 2024, it wouldn’t be a stretch to expect such a significant system to make its way into other future models like the stunning Polestar O₂ concept that will eventually become the Polestar 6.
