In collaboration with Google, Swedish electric vehicle manufacturer Polestar has announced two significant new tech features for its Polestar 2 sedan and upcoming Polestar 3 SUV.

Both of these vehicles run Google’s Android Automotive OS. By utilizing what started in life as smartphone-based software, these cars can more seamlessly blend their UI, entertainment features, and safety systems.

To capitalize on this level of integration, Polestar and Google unveiled HD maps. As its name implies, these are more detailed maps available to the car’s various safety and driver assist features. According to Polestar, these maps will “combine its vehicle sensor technology and Google’s precise lane-level and localization data to facilitate driver assistance features like Pilot Assist, as well as future autonomous driving functionality.”

These new maps and their subsequent advantages will debut on the Polestar 3, with deliveries slated to begin toward the fourth quarter of this year. The brand’s first SUV has a starting price of $83,900.

Aside from the maps, Goole and Polestar announced that its current Polestar 2 and upcoming vehicles will now offer Google Assistant connectivity. This will allow owners to check vehicle status and access features such as climate preconditioning and door unlocking from their virtual assistant. Google Assistant is available for both smart home and smartphone devices.
