Instant torque is fun for drifting, especially in a low gravity environment. To offer off-world insights into the abilities of electric cars, the new 2021 Porsche Taycan was driven by Astronaut Charlie Duke. As the Lunar Module Pilot of Apollo 16, General Duke was also among only six men to experience the Lunar Rover. For the 50th anniversary of the 4-wheeled wonder, Porsche decided to hand over their latest electric masterpiece to this American Hero.
Compared to the new Porsche Taycan Turbo S for sale, the “Lunar Roving Vehicle” was built by GM with four 1/4 horsepower motors, one at each wheel. Under black skies, one horsepower is plenty to move a buggy that only weighs 77 lbs. Send the 616-horsepower Porsche to the moon and it beats the buggy by 30%. Needless to say, the Taycan would be capable of taller rooster tails with a range of nearly 200 miles.
