A new, sustainable dawn is rising on Porsche’s US headquarters.
The Taycan is Porsche’s increasingly popular inaugural all-electric car, and Porsche’s venture toward sustainability continues as Porsche Cars North America has announced a partnership with Cherry Street Energy of Georgia to build and operate a solar power microgrid at Porsche’s Atlanta, Georgia headquarters as well as the Porsche Experience Center Atlanta at One Porsche Drive. The microgrid uses its own solar power source, and also connects to the larger power grid. This construction is a part of lots of construction that is going on at One Porsche Drive to expand the driver development tracks and facilities on the campus.
Once it is finished, Porsche says that a significant part of the annual electricity needs of the campus will be met with solar power, and better yet, Porsche Taycans that are parked at the facility and using the facility’s chargers will be charged by purely renewable power. This endeavor is part of Porsche’s bigger effort as a brand to be completely carbon neutral across the entire value chain and life cycle of newly-sold vehicles by 2030. Cherry Street Energy says that the implementation of the solar microgrid will reduce CO2 by 3.2 million pounds per year with its power generation, which is equivalent to eliminating 3.6 million miles of driving for the average passenger vehicle. Installation of the solar panels will start in September and reportedly be completed in 2023, and at that point, a 25-year agreement between Porsche and Cherry Street Energy will begin in which Cherry Street owns and operates the panels and sells the power to Porsche. Going beyond the cars themselves, Porsche plans to shed some light on a sustainable future.
