Broad Arrow Auctions, a Hagerty company, is thrilled to offer an exciting collection of over 100 collectible cars offered entirely without reserve—including some of the most desirable American, European, and British pre- and post-War automobiles ever produced at the Art Academy University Auction this 15 February in San Francisco. Highlights include this 1955 Mercedes-Benz 300 SL Gullwing Coupe estimated at $1,200,000 – $1,500,000 and is offered without reserve.
The Mercedes-Benz 300 SL “Gullwing” Coupe was the first true sports car developed by Daimler-Benz after World War II, thanks to Max Hoffman, an Austrian-American; the official importer of Mercedes-Benz in the U.S. The 300 SL was based on the Mercedes 1952 racing car, featuring a most distinctive element: gullwing doors. These were a necessity due to the car’s tubular space frame, which was engineered too high for conventional doors. The streamlined body also introduced several innovations, including Mercedes-Benz’s first use of direct fuel injection, boosting output by 40 horsepower compared to the carbureted racing model. The engine was tilted to ensure a low, aerodynamic profile. Weighing just 2,866 pounds with spare tire and tools, the new 300 SL offered sensational, unheard-of performance.
With order number 668 064, this 300 SL began to take shape in Sindelfingen. A copy of the original Data Card shows that it was assigned chassis number 5500429, the car completed production on 20 June 1955 in Graphite Grey (DB190), one of just 61 cars to receive this finish for the 1955 model year. Offering a splendid contrast, the interior was specified with Red leather (1079). The Gullwing Group Registry lists the consignee as Mercedes-Benz Distributors, Inc. of New York, with factory remarks showing the car as a special order.
Furthermore, the Gullwing Group Registry lists the car as having three owners in the San Francsico Bay region through 1989. The car is then reported to have been owned by John Jay Moores, former owner of the San Diego Padres. Under his direction, the car received a comprehensive restoration by the acclaimed Hjeltness Restorations of Escondido, California. During the restoration, the Gullwing’s livery was changed to its present rare shade of Strawberry Red Metallic (DB543) over a Natural leather (1068) interior.
During the comprehensive, body-off restoration, virtually no aspect of the car was overlooked. Attention to detail is evident throughout the car, with an appropriate set of belly pans to the finely fitted interior. The set of two-piece sports wheels with chrome-plated barrels and polished aluminum centers add a sporting touch without the increased weight from the Rudge knock-off wheels. A two-piece set of matching luggage was commissioned as a final detail of this fabulous restoration. Following the restoration, noted collector Sid Craig acquired the car. His spouse, Jenny Craig, sold it from their collection after his passing in late 2008. The Academy of Art University Collection then acquired the car in 2009, where it has remained on display for students and the public alike for the past 15 years.
Given the restoration’s age, the quality is truly apparent as the car presents itself beautifully today.
