Our friends at Gateway Bronco started out collecting and preserving Ford Broncos. Over the past few we’ve told you their story. Seth Burgett was on a personal mission to save them for posterity. Original Broncos are still disappearing at an alarming rate, so an epic road trip resulted in his personal collection of 15 barn finds and celebrity collectibles.
Once the word got out, Bronco owners from around the country began to take notice of their neglected machines. After hiring a talented team of fabricators, they began to restore these classics in a 60,000 square-foot facility. Located just outside of St. Louis, the gateway to the west, it allows them easy access to barn-find survivors hiding in the Midwest and the high plains.
Restorations inevitably led to upgrades and improvements to the original design. What started with a few powder coated parts led them to acquire an entire powder coating company, including a 30-foot oven. This allows each model to be rust-proof inside and out. Next up was addressing the archaic suspension.
After boxing and the frame of a design, it was time to say goodbye to leaf springs. The front and rear axles are now connected by their own 4-link systems. The coil-over shocks can be easily adjusted for crawling or cruising, and the unequal length arms keep your u-joints happy for years to come.
Because Seth is an award-winning engineer and a Six Sigma Black Belt, Ford saw the potential for collaboration. So after years of building his brand, Ford Officially Licensed Gateway as the only authorized manufacturer of first-generation Broncos.
But modern comfort and stability were just the of the iceberg. Customers also began inquiring about a host of other aftermarket parts, components used in pro-touring and resto-mod builds. So the team decided to go all in. This resulted in the Modern Day Warrior.
Starting with a newly designed frame built for stability, their 4-link suspension gained Fox Racing shocks to create a canyon carving Bronco on the highway. Ford supplies a new Coyote 5.0L along with the 6-speed automatic transmission used in the Raptor. Behind that is an Atlas transfer case with divorced shifters for each axle.
The 5-year bumper to bumper warranty covers even the smallest details. Those like the LED interior lighting and the barn wood bed floor. They could have used Ford production disc brakes, but Brembo helped design massive discs along with a HydroBoost master cylinder. This allows it to stop quicker than a Ford Raptor from 60-0 mph. If you are wondering why such a light truck needs such stopping power, we have to address the elephant in the room.
On top of the V8 is a massive Shelby supercharger. Based on the same Whipple blower found on the Super Snake, it allows the Modern Day Warrior to offer 800 horsepower to all wheels. That is 8x more powerful than the 170 ci straight six that once lived under the hood. You will have the ability to pass supercars like they were standing still, and make your diesel friends reconsider their place in life. If that’s not enough, Gateway also offers optional twin turbos. This isn’t an aftermarket kit, the hot and cold sides are fabricated by hand, in-house.
Also included is a reference quality audio system, modern R134 Air Conditioning and a bison leather interior.
