History of McIntosh Labs: Luxurious Sound With Iconic Style

All McIntosh Laboratory, Inc. products are built at our Binghamton, NY factory by over 150 employees with a passion for music and the McIntosh heritage. We continue to define the ultimate home entertainment experience for discriminating consumers around the world.

Since our inception, we have been powering some of the most important moments in music history and pop culture. In 1965, our amps were used to power President Lyndon Johnson’s inauguration speech. Four years later, McIntosh powered Woodstock – one of the most important events in music history. And in 1974, we powered the infamous Grateful Dead “Wall of Sound,” a cutting stage design that brought high quality audio to stadium sized crowds and is still talked about today. McIntosh has not only witnessed history, it has shaped it.

As we approach our 70th anniversary, McIntosh continues to evolve and remain at the forefront of the audio world. When Compact Discs were introduced in the mid-1980s, we were one of the first companies to offer CD players to enjoy this new technology. A successful line of car audio products was introduced in the 1990s and was available in cars from the likes of BMW and Subaru among others. Car buyers were given a choice of amplifiers with or without meters; amplifiers with meters were the overwhelming choice as drivers wanted to make sure passengers knew who made the luxury audio system in their new car. While we no longer make car audio products, they remain highly sought after in the used market.

Also in the 1990s, home theaters became popular and we developed a successful line of home theater products whose current versions are still in high demand today. Then in the early 2000s when the way music was consumed evolved, we developed music servers where people could store and play all their new digital music files. As music consumption methods continues to change, McIntosh continues to evolve. We now offer a variety of streaming audio solutions to meet the needs of today’s digital music lover. Not to overlook the opposite side of the spectrum, we continue to offer a variety of analog solutions like turntables and vacuum tube amplifiers.
