When history and exclusivity collide, the automotive world is in for a treat. That’s precisely what the visitors and potential buyers will get at this year’s Monterey event.

The historic 1966 Ford GT40 MKI was delivered from the Ford Advanced Vehicles factory in Slough, Buckinghamshire, England to the Ford Division Headquarters in Dearborn, Michigan, making it the first GT40 road car delivered to North America. After a brief stint as a test and evaluation car on the Ford test track, this example, dubbed P/1028 initially, was promoted to the official Ford North America Promotional GT40. The first stop on its promotional tour was at the 1966 12 Hours of Sebring in Florida. It was here that GT40 MKI was paraded around and parked in pit lane, giving spectators a closer look at the car. P/1028 spent six months traveling around the United States before it was sent to Comstock Racing in Toronto, Canada, where it continued promotional outings.

P/1028 features a 289 CI V-8 engine with 11,000 original miles clocked on it. This engine is mated to a 5-speed manual transmission. Fitted with proper air conditioning, leather trim, luggage boxes, undersealed chassis and painted with a special finish, the GT40 MKI is a true gem on the market. It’s considered among the most significant road going GT40s to date and underwent a comprehensive four-year restoration, which was finished in 2016. The restoration of the car involved as many original parts, pieces and materials as could be found. Additionally, this amazing car was owned by the same family for nearly 40 years. This is the first time it is available for sale to the public, making it an incredible opportunity for the right person. What’s more, it looks just like it did 50 years ago when it was first paraded around at Sebring.
