At 8 pm Pacific time last night, Sept. 29, Tesla founder and CEO Elon Musk took the stage and announced the official launch of the completely electric SUV. It’s incredibly powerful, incredibly safe and another step in a total revolution of the transportation industry.

“We’ve proved that any car can go electric,” Musk stated, then listing off the already achieved accomplishments of the marque. The Roadster proved a sports car could run off of a battery, the Model S has proven that a battery-powered sedan can be more powerful than supercars and the Model X brings that truth to the SUV segment.

The impressive and popular Ludicrous mode launched for the Model S July 20 is available in the Model X P90D, propelling the seven-seater from 0 to 60 mph in 3.2 seconds. Without the upgrade, the P90D can still reach 60 from a standstill in 3.8 seconds, and the 90D version in 4.8 seconds, with a top speed of 155 mph.

CNET had the chance to take one for a drive, and shared a video of their experience on YouTube Sept. 29. Their conclusion? It’s incredibly reminiscent of the Model S, but with much better visibility. The falcon wings make accessing the back seats much more comfortable, and their equipped with sensors to guarantee they don’t hit the cars next to you or a ceiling above when they open.

And, it’s reported to be incredibly safe. In his reveal, a graph showing the Model X’s probability of overall injury as being approximately 7 percent – to receive a five-star rating from the NHTSA, a car’s probability must be 10 percent or less.

As of right now, only the first five customers to order one will receive their cars, and those who have not reserved one yet will have quite some time to wait before receiving theirs. There are 30,000 pre-orders for Tesla to get through, and new reservations aren’t expected to receive delivery until late 2016.
