“Holy Grail” Musgo Gasoline Sign Being Auctioned Off

1922 1

Presented by Richmond Auctions.

Richmond Auctions is extremely proud to bring this NOS, Best Known Example, Holy Grail, Musgo Gasoline sign to market as part of our upcoming 2-day auction, August 26th & 27th, 2022.

This 48” Double-Sided Porcelain Musgo Gasoline sign is NOS (New Old Stock). It was found in an attic in Michigan and it’s truly fresh to market – it has never been seen by the public eye before now.

By far, it’s the Best Known Example of this sign and is the highest graded Musgo known to exist. We don’t believe a better example will ever be offered up for auction again. NO touchups, restoration or enhancements exist. This sign is truly new old stock, with day one color and gloss.

“No clear records have been found on the origination or the demise of the Musgo company.” However, “we know the company was in business in 1929 because all Musgo globes have the date 1929 stamped on them. The company was located in Muskegon, Michigan and it is believed that they were only in business for six months to two years.

“Although the reason the Musgo went out of business is still unknown, some people feel that based on the time period and the approaching “Great Depression,” they simply went bankrupt. This would help explain why the remaining stock remained on the shelves of the warehouse to be used at the new warehouse owner’s discretion. Others feel that Musgo went the way of so many small gas companies and was bought out by a larger one or they went to a national brand.

“Collectors should also note that the only size sign that Musgo produced was the 48” porcelain sign… Any other size of Musgo sign… is a reproduction.” -The Fine Art of Collecting & Displaying Petroliana, Vol. 1 by Daniel K. Matthews
