The 911 model that landed Elmar a job at Porsche.

For the Porsche brand, craftsmanship defines the characteristics of each performance-focused vehicle assembled at the German-based facility, no matter its size. Over the decades as an industry leader in the automotive market, Porsche continues to celebrate its passion for performance with small-scale models that accurately represent the same detailed craftsmanship that goes into each full-size production vehicle. The idea behind hand-building magnificent Porsche examples began with Elmar Roßmayer.

After creating an early Porsche 911 Coupé model, it was discovered by a member of the Porsche family during an event at the Württembergischer Yacht Club in Lindau, Germany. After reading the brass plaque that included his name and address, Elmar was offered a position at Porsche to build model cars. Porsche is proud to now showcase Elmar Roßmayer and his Porsche 911 Targa model at the museum in Zuffenhasuen during the ’50 Years of Porsche Design’ celebration.

The blue 1:5-scale Porsche 911 Targa was the second commissioned example from the German sports car manufacturer, a historical gem that stands aside other trophies, sculptures, and technical miniatures. The 911 Targa features a complete exterior and interior design, removable targa top, glass, adjustable seats, a set of Fuchs wheels, with an array of parts and features that operate the same as a full-size spec. Porsche was happy to pay the price for the unusual Targa: Roßmayer billed exactly 1,257.75 hours at ten marks an hour.

Elmar expresses his excitement and worries at the time by saying “I was really nervous. I smoked a pack of cigarettes, HBs, on the way there, wondering all the while if the model would appeal to the gentlemen of Porsche. And on the way back I was happy that the Targa had been so well received. I smoked another whole pack there and then!”. The 1:5-scale blue Porsche 911 Targa by Elmar Roßmayer is currently on-scene in the special ’50 Years of Porsche Design’ exhibit next to two 911 originals, a chair, a number of pipes and a pair of Porsche sunglasses.
