Electric cars have played center-stage in several high-voltage incidents lately. Perhaps that’s why VW’s brands have been reticent to jump on the battery bandwagon. With models like the Porsche Mission E and the Audi e-tron series nearing completion, the new Vision Gran Turismo concept is straight outta Sony.
Audi R8 e-tron Spotted Testing in Germany
Working with Playstation engineers, Audi has unveiled a real-life version of their e-tron coupe from the Gran Turismo game franchise. In a press release early this morning, we’ve learned the e-tron Vision Gran Turismo will serve as the Race Taxi for the remainder of this year’s Formula E racing series. Audi was the first brand to enter Formula E last year, taking lessons learned from the A3 e-tron Sportback and a few top-secret prototypes.

Peter Mertens, Member of the Board of Management for Audi’s Technical Development had this to say: “E-Mobility is rapidly gaining importance. That is why in 2017 Audi was the first German manufacturer to enter Formula E with a factory-backed commitment. In our development laboratory motorsport, we are continuously expanding our expertise in e-mobility and gathering valuable experience also in extremely demanding conditions. With the Audi e-tron Vision Gran Turismo race taxi we are turning electric mobility into a tangible experience for our customers and guests as part of the Formula E races – in the middle of the world’s metropolises.”
Audi has been testing battery power in almost every vehicle they offer. We know this because their testing lab happens to be behind Burger King, two blocks west of our headquarters. It is always nice to run into a camouflaged prototype on the interstate because the Teutonic technicians hate being identified. Audi is also the only manufacturer allowed to test fleets of autonomous cars on Tampa’s Selmon Expressway, so it’s easy for us to see the future is not far away.
