Audi is at the forefront of development for the transportation industry, but not just in the automotive sector.
The brand with the four rings has introduced a plug-in hybrid locomotive in a press release today, an electric-and-gas-powered beast with 1,000 hp. It’s replacing the train that Audi currently uses at their Ingolstadt plant to transport finished vehicles and vehicle components from facility to facility, moving the entire production chain toward a more sustainable model.
“Our goal is all‑round sustainable logistics,” stated Johann Schmid, head of the Audi plant railway in Ingolstadt, in the release. “The new railway technology allows more economical, energy‑efficient and low‑emission rail transport. In connection with the latest chassis technology, the plug‑in‑hybrid locomotive sets new standards in shunting and rail transport.”

The release states that 15 trains arrive at the plant bearing various goods and items every day, operating for a total of 3,800 hours on average every year. With the new hybrid trains, they’ll be able to rely solely on electric power for up to two hours each day, reducing overall carbon dioxide emissions by 60 tons every year.
