A V6 engine is quite a departure from Ferrari’s norms, and while it has been done before in the form of Dino cars, those were badged with “Dino” so as to not be Prancing Horse-badged cars by technicality. However, the modern era has seen a new Ferrari that is ready to fully embrace the concept of the V6 engine in its new hybrid V6 supercar, the 296 GTB, and the inclusion of such an engine is certainly not a compromise from Ferrari’s typical performance, as the supercar produces an incredible 819 horsepower. One of the world’s favorite car enthusiasts, Jay Leno, got behind the wheel to see if this new and very different Ferrari is all it’s cracked up to be.
The car isn’t his, rather it’s owned by the famous Ferrari collector David Lee. Finished in yellow paintwork with the Assetto Fiorano specification, the car is part of Lee’s yellow collection. In conversation with Lee, Leno remarks on the changes in the automotive industry, with immense power coming from smaller engines, and in the case of the 296 GTB, smaller and more nimble cars as a whole. Once he hits the road, he talks about the fact that the 296 GTB is more fun to drive than the Ferrari’s faster, more powerful hybrid counterpart, the all-wheel drive SF90 Stradale, concluding by saying that he likes the 296 GTB better in general. Being someone who has experienced and driven more cars than most car enthusiasts out there, the seal of approval from Jay Leno is an important achievement for the new Ferrari 296 GTB.
